When trying to achieve a summer tan look you should always consider your skin's health.

Sunless tanning is a safe way to change the natural color of your skin to become tan. However, contrary to what most people think that tanning products are just merely swiped, sprayed or consumed without worry, there are actually precautions you need to take.

Careless sunless tanning could lead your skin to undergo premature aging and cause a lot more damage to your epidermis. Here are some of the things you have to remember before you start applying and using self tanning products.

1. Avoid shaving immediately before application. When you are applying a self tanning spray or lotion you should not shave immediately beforehand. Doing so will only end up causing skin irritations. You do not want some red rashes that will come with your beautifully tan colored skin. Shave at least a day before so your skin has the time to heal.

2. Additional applications. There are some areas in your body that you do not want to be too dark. To make sure that they do not look too dark, you can apply baby oil, gel or lotion in your knees or elbows before you put on some self tanning lotion.

3. Avoid uneven tan. Patience is indeed a virtue. After your application of the tanning lotion make sure to let it stay for at least an hour or two. Jumping to the water or immediately showering after application might result to the removal of the lotion on some parts of the body. This will then result to streaking or uneven skin color. You definitely do not want to look like a tropical zebra.

4. Use gloves. To prevent you're the palm of your hands from turning a different color when you apply a tanning lotion on your skin, it is best to use disposable gloves. The lotion will just stick to the gloves. Whether you used gloves or your bare hands to put tanning lotion, do not forget to thoroughly wash your hands.

5. Do some exfoliation. To maintain a healthy skin even if the color changed to tan, you should wash your skin with exfoliating products before applying some tanning lotion. This will help you achieve a beautifully tanned skin.

6. Areas that require special attention. Do not immediately apply the tanning lotion on your knees, feet, hands and elbows. It is best that you first dilute it with a moisturizing lotion and rub it gently on these special body parts. You can use a makeup sponge applicator to gently apply and the rub the lotion.

7. UV Protection. Since self tanning products do not have any UV protection ingredients, so be careful if you are out in the sun. If you need to be out in the sun make sure you put on some sunscreen.

Achieve a beautiful tan without the presence of the sun is very possible through safe sunless tanning. Be sure to use caution and you can have a healthy glowing skin tone any time you desire.
